For my drawings, I work on large sheets of brown paper that are about 24×36″ that I trim to size when need be, that are almost card stock material. I use oil pastels, by good ole’ Crayola (the schmear the best!), and slowly build up the color and blend it together and smooth it out with my hands as I work. I’m a right mess by the end of a drawing session!
This was the very first of my ‘Ladies’ ever. Sam, my drawing and painting, teacher, gave us a quote to work off of for the semester, which was: “The punishment for perfection is reproduction.” I took a view of it that was about stereotypes of women, and just went with it from there! She was my darkest ever, and I think once I got my anger out in her about the oppression of women, I was like, ‘ok! happy celebration time! wee!
One of my earlier Ladies, she’s based on ‘The Birth of Venus”, by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
Bent over backwards in this one.
Both her body and head are balloons, and she is about to pop herself. I was kind of thinking about some of the self-destructive habits that women can have.
Just a waspy-waisted blue Lady.
I was playing with cramming her in without making her feel too cramped in this one, like she’s about to bust out. It’s something I continue to play with in a few others.
I did this one because I was mad at the photo department for taking over our building, however, someone neglected to tell the students the whole story, and the photo and art people switching buildings was supposed to be a super positive thing, but it got turned into a super negative thing by a few people who got their pantyhose in a bunch. But, s’est la vie.
She’s just red. And bent over backwards. I might very well have been mad at Josh when I did this one…
I love this one, I think she’s one of my fav drawings. For her, I was working more from an actual image of a woman, than just one out of my head, which is what I had been doing for a while. I am particularly satisfied with how her thighs and lady bits turned out.
Another of my more recent drawings, again from an image. Come to think of it, I really like how she turned out too.
